Today, students had the opportunity to practice the strategies for different divisibility rules that they are still working on mastering. Some students had the chance to work in groups on an enrichment "factors and multiples puzzle" (an example of one group's work is below). I will attach the puzzle in another post, if anybody wants to try to "crack the code" at home.
Some students still do not have a duotang for their centres work every Thursday. This work will be part of the evidence used for report cards and needs to be kept organized. Individual pieces of looseleaf will not work. If you do not have a duotang, please make sure to have one for next week. I just wanted to apologize for not updating this website in a few days but we had a sudden death of a young person in my family that has had me rattled. I have been with the students yesterday and today and we have done a lot of work with mean, median, and mode.
Students have all received their quizzes on divisibility rules and know what they need to continue to practice as we have been able to break down the rules that are considered completed and those that "still need work." Tomorrow with Mme Killam students will be given the chance to explore the rules they didn't quite have last week and practice/work through some new strategies for them. Students who have all their rules down pat will be working on enrichment activities as well during this time. To end the week we will complete our third "M" moyenne (which is the average). Students have collected data and are able to easily determine mode and with some work are able to find the median as well. With the help of a calculator and persistence, finding the average should come naturally. This is such an important skill to learn as they get older and are able to use outside the classroom. Thank you for all of your kind messages, it truly means the world. Mme Roach Today, we had our first practice day of centres work which focused on review for tomorrow's quiz. We practiced expectations for working in groups and I was able to work with 1-2 small groups of students in each class. We are off to a great start for our Thursday centres! Students who did not finish the Practice Centre work today and want to practice for tomorrow's test can complete the questions posted below at home tonight.
Some students still do not have a duo-tang for centres work on Thursdays. Please have a duo-tang with some loose-leaf in it for next Thursday. Due to time constraints, we were not able to debrief the 10-digit mystery number challenge. Also, there were quite a few students who wanted to continue to try to find the answer so I did provide hints on how to continue to tackle this challenging question. Mme Roach and I promise to provide the solution very soon! So, tonight, review the divisibility rules (posted in the N1 Divisibility section of the blog), practice, get a good night's rest, and show us what you know tomorrow on your quiz! Mme Killam Today students were given a "defi des milliards" and worked extremely hard during their entire math class to crack this code. After 3 classes, we have yet to find the answer. Students were frustrated but also extremely engaged and had some amazing conversations! Mme Killam will be finishing up with this and helping them crack the code on Thursday. Tomorrow is a day for practice and some mental math work. We have a quiz on divisibility rules on Friday.
Happy Tuesday Mme Roach We have completed our divisibility rules today and they are posted in the division section of the home page. Students are expected to know rules for 2,3,4,5,6,8,9, and 10 and will be having a quiz on Friday. The quiz will include not only divisibility rules but also questions about factors and multiples. We have accomplished a lot in our short time together and this week is another big week. Expect journals and mental math questions focusing on division this week as well as some fun games and activities.

Have a great weekend! Mme. Roach We had a great day today in math! All students in each class got right down to work so everyone earned points for being on task today. We spent some time looking at how centres activities will work on Thursdays and my expectations for students during Thursday class. Possible centres each Thursday might include a review station of old outcomes, a practice station for the current outcome, a catch-up and enrichment station for students who have incomplete work and/or want a challenge in Math, a mental math station, a game/activity station, and a station where I can work with small groups of students. This mix should ensure success for everyone!
Today, we learned how to play "Divisibility War" with two decks of cards to practice what we have learned so far. If you have two different decks of cards at home, I encourage students to teach the game to someone at home and play it as homework. You can review how to play under the Divisibility Rules N1 section of this website. Don't forget that tomorrow is school colour day to show your cougar pride! Thanks, Mme Killam Today was all about mental math! Students were introduced to the concept that there is not only ONE way to solve a problem. In my math classroom I encourage ALL different kinds of thinking and am so excited to see how many ways we can come up with the same answer as a whole! Once a week students will be focusing on their mental math skills with the intent that by the end of 7th grade their confidence will increase dramatically in these situations. Today was a great day - many amazing answers and most of all, different strategies were shared! See you on Friday!
