Mme Roach
Today students were introduced to the concept of "Moyenne" which is Average. We worked on simple problems and even did a class survey using different data to find the average. We found average height, average birth date, and our favourite numbers! It was a great intro! Mme Roach

Today, students had their first short Mental Math quiz on the Front End Addition strategy. We then practiced this week's strategy which is "Break Up and Bridge". Students can use the examples below to practice for next Thursday's quiz:
23 + 85 (23 + 80 is 103 and 5 more is 108) 347 + 531 (347 and 500 is 847, plus 30 more is 877 and 1 more is 878). 1235 + 4622 2,4 + 3,5 We wrapped up our unit on Divisibility Rules with a game of Family Feud today! Mme Killam Students worked together in teams of 2-4 today to crack some codes in math class! Our warm up "magic square" was cracked by many but the 10 digit number "defi des milliard" is yet to be cracked...(Well by one student)! This was a great day to work as a team!
And your child about our game today, it's a blast! One less chair than person and a number to divide and you're all set! Check out all of the learning and movement we had going on today! It was a good day to have a good day! Mme. Roach Today's focus was on the divisibility rules for 4 and 8! Our first quiz will be on Wednesday!9/20/2019 Today, students were able to review and practice the divisibility rules for 4 and 8. We were able to come to conclusion about a strategy that we ALL loved to help us make the rule for 8 much easier! Our first quiz will be on Wednesday, and many of our students are already ready for it! We will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday! Happy Friday and Happy Weekend! Mme Roach Today, our first mental math strategy was introduced. This week, we focused on Front End Addition and students will start next Thursday's class with a short quiz on this strategy. A few examples are: 23 + 85 (20 + 80 + 3 + 5 = 108) 347 + 531 1235 + 4622 2,4 + 3,5 Students can use these examples to review and practice for next Thursday's quiz. We also played the game "Blocked" (pictured below) to help students review all of the divisibility rules before next Wednesday's quiz on our first outcome. Reminder that divisibility rule booklets are due to Mme Roach tomorrow. Also, don't forget to wear your Cougar colours tomorrow to school! Thanks for the great classes today! Mme Killam Students are getting more comfortable with the divisibility rule for 3 and today we were able to review that with a Venn Diagram. We found out that numbers that are divisible by 3 and 5 are also divisible by 15 - WOAH! We were able to play a card game that helped us understand ALL of our divisibility rules a little bit better and also helped with mental math multiplication! The rest of the week will have a heavy focus on practice and nailing down the rules for 4 and 8. Take the chance to talk to you child about this card game that can be easily played at home. HOMEWORK: Divisibility Rules Booklet is due to Madame Roach on Friday morning at 9:50 am (second period!) Happy Tuesday! Mme Roach Today students were able to recap their week in their first ever journal writing activity. We reviewed the rules of 2,5,10,3,6, and 9. Many students will need much more practice with 3 - 6 - 9 next week which is always the case - don't worry! Today we started our booklets for Divisibility Rules that we will be able to have for quick notes/check in while we are working/practicing next week. Students will have one page with each rule with the definition and many examples. It was a great day starting our first math project. These books will be finished on Monday and there is NO need for them to go home. Most of our Math materials stay in the class - ALWAYS!
Happy Weekend! Mme Roach We had a great first Mental Math Thursday today! We started with 100 multiplication facts in 10 minutes. The Grade 7 curriculum has many outcomes that depend on math fluency (being able to perform multiplication facts automatically in one's head) so we like to assess where students are with that early on. We then played the Product Game ( https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Product-Game/ ) to practice these facts while trying to be strategic to win. For students who felt they needed practice on their multiplication facts after our 100 facts assessment, it would be great practice to play this game with someone at home over the next week (or to face off against the computer). Good luck playing at home!
For students in our homeroom, letters were sent home today with students who are missing vaccination records in their cumulative record. Please send in confirmation of these vaccinations as soon as possible so that the CR can be updated. We appreciate your help with this! Have a great week and keep practicing those facts! Mme Killam |
