Today students did 3 quiz questions in their weekly journal that focused on percentages, decimals, and fractions. Students should be very comfortable switching back and forth from each form. Below are some of the questions we did (1-3 were done alone in their journals) and the rest of the questions were done in partners. It was amazing to see how many possibilities the students came up with! Mme. Roach

We continued to work on Mental Math strategies and review today. See today's 10 question quiz posted below for students are were absent. We also reviewed calculating percentages of a number with our favourite Math-O game. Some of the Math-O numbers called are also posted below for practice for students who were absent. Students have a small quiz tomorrow on percentages before we move on to adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers next week.
Mme Killam Today students reviewed some of our Mental Math strategies that have been learned throughout grades 5,6, & 7. We have been noticing that more practice in this area will be very beneficial to all students! More specifically multiplication and division facts.
As our class wide activity today, students were given 1000$ to "shop" with. They were required to purchase a minimum of 7 objects (cut out from magazines) and add tax to their objects. They were responsible to keep a chat with each object's: Name, Original Price, Tax Amount, and Total. The goal was to get as close to 1000$ as possible without going over! We have only had two classes so far but we have one student purchase 14 items and calculate his total to be 999.8$ and another student was at 999.12$! This is a perfect activity for day to day life and also for mental math! Find 10% and then cut it in half to find the 5%. Together, this will make the 15% that you are looking for which is our tax amount here in NB! Have a great day and for those of you who aren't here. Make sure you are keeping an eye on this website and are connecting with your friends in your classes! Mme. Roach |
