As our class wide activity today, students were given 1000$ to "shop" with. They were required to purchase a minimum of 7 objects (cut out from magazines) and add tax to their objects. They were responsible to keep a chat with each object's: Name, Original Price, Tax Amount, and Total.
The goal was to get as close to 1000$ as possible without going over! We have only had two classes so far but we have one student purchase 14 items and calculate his total to be 999.8$ and another student was at 999.12$!
This is a perfect activity for day to day life and also for mental math! Find 10% and then cut it in half to find the 5%. Together, this will make the 15% that you are looking for which is our tax amount here in NB!
Have a great day and for those of you who aren't here. Make sure you are keeping an eye on this website and are connecting with your friends in your classes!
